the 2013 'house vision' exhibition in tokyo, directed and curated by kenya hara, brings together some of the foremost names in japanese architecture to present their often times radical ideas on new housing concepts that suggest possible relationships with the dwellings we inhabit and the products that make quotidian tasks possible. as high density has historically been an issue in the compact country, the annual exposition is a way of researching and communicating new ideas for the future house. japanese practice naruse inokuma architects worked hand in hand with florist azuma makoto of AMKK, sponsored by international toilet manufacturer TOTO and window and door pioneers YKK AP to showcase their bathroom concept that rethinks the roles of the garden and privacy in a refreshing new way. the structure is an almost volumetric canvas on which lush vegetation blankets the interior surfaces, taking the traditional characteristic of the green wall and inverting it. the user is in this case completely immersed within a peaceful atmosphere between breathing walls brought to life by light and air. the ground plane is also removed, made practical for interior functions with a glass floor over a continued green living plane. the built structure becomes a secondary object in the context of a three-dimensional garden used to frame views in various directions through the large openings located on each wall. the exhibition runs from march 2nd until the 24th, displaying projects by renowned japanese architects such as shigeru ban, sou fujimoto, toyo ito and kengo kuma.
